Studying is not only the art of learning, but it is also the art of being a human. I come to learn and understand this meaning when I encounter the subject Development of Psychological Thoughts. It is a long process for me to get in touch with myself through learning from this subject.
From the very beginning, I found discouraged to learn especially Piaget’s writings. It seemed to me that I lost appetite when I was challenged to confront the demands. Reading Piaget’s writing is quiet difficulty. Understanding Piaget’s writing is a great challenge that requires me patience and creativity. What can I do in order to gain the knowledge? How to understand this subject better? How to apply what I learn for my present and future mission?
All the questions appeared in my mind like an invitation for me to try my best to response it in a creative way. And yes, I discovered my own way to apply for what I have learned. I shared my understandings about Piaget’s theories with other people in order to learn from them too and compare with my understandings. I realized it was a helpful way for me to get deeper my knowledge. I told myself “It is helpful but not enough.” I wanted something more that can be applied in my daily life. And I found. They are:
- Analyzing my own dreams: though I didn’t know what all about analyzing dream was, but I tried and successfully satisfied with what I had done. Analyzing dream is only one part of the whole process. I realized that the most important part of analyzing dream is the word acceptance. When I accepted the dreams were mine, my issues and my needs, it is the time I could solve my unspoken stories and learned the wisdom behind the dreams.
- Love is not enough: is it true to say “Love is not enough?” Reflecting on this challenge question, I came to recognize that love will be never enough because human love is incomplete and it does not lead to the wholeness. As a Christian, I learn by heart “God is love.” God is the representative of Love and only God’s love is perfect and more than enough. If human’s love is enough and complete, we will never need God’s presence in our life. Through this I learned the true meaning of human’s love and God’s love.
- Studying Piaget’s theory: most of my time for this subject is to learn about Piaget’s theory. It takes me a lot of time to understanding through conducting experiments as Piaget did to have a new insight.
The lessons I learned are not only for knowledge gain but moreover I gained the wisdom of being simple, humble, hard-working and patient. For the experience of doing experiment, I was so discouraged when I asked for permission to conduct the experiments in the private school. There were so many discouragements such as processing of letters to different offices, the communication limited and the services. But I was encouraged to continue following up what I proposed. I did. And I was successful. The participants would laugh at me when I spoke Tagalog to them while I was handling experiments with non-English speaking participants. I really felt distracted when my participants just looked at my mouth without focusing on what I tried to explain. Some of the young participants even hardly got my Tagalog. I tried to repeat until they could get what I really wanted to ask them. It’s truly hard to smile while I was put in the middle of sign language.
Everything was done well. What leaves with me and in me is the joy of learning and being learned in the midst of challenges. I have learned and kept what I learned so that I can share with others in my daily life.
Thanks for this reflection that I am asked to get in touch and be generous with myself by recognizing that I deal with this reality not by denying, ignoring or swallowing my challenges and difficulties, but by acknowledging and moving through it and putting it in the context of desire for learning and serving.
Therefore, this does not mean everything will then be perfect. It does not mean there will be no more difficulties. But it means that I can have a new heart that is steadfast and oriented. That’s the most important thing that I learned from my own experience and prove myself from it for the better mission and service.
